March is here, along with your first notice for the 2014 Wildwood Clean Up – the 36th year for this annual event! However, planning for this event starts on January 2nd each year, when we ask the City to book their compacter trucks for that special Saturday.
Why do I enjoy organizing this event? My wife and I moved to Wildwood in late 2001 and I dutifully volunteered to help with the 2002 Clean Up. I still remember that day – meeting all the volunteers, riding down our back lanes in someone’s truck, picking up interesting items that had been left out, including a thank you card from older residents who had seen every Clean Up. Then my new friend Gord and I were offered an old truck to do our very own route. We found a shelving unit (that I think Gord still has) and ran out of gas while finishing our route.
So, when Bill Evelyn announced in 2007 that he needed someone to run the Clean Up, I jumped at the chance. I received a well- documented file and continued following the procedures passed down from all the previous organizers. The best part is when all the volunteers come out on “The Day.” The day virtually runs itself, because of the core volunteers who come out each year. They take newcomers into the fold, tell them what is needed and so the core group expands each year. The announcement used to say the day would happen “Rain or Shine,” but in 2010 we had snow, so now it reads “Rain or Shine or Snow!” No matter what the weather, everyone seems to have a good time.
So mark your calendars for Saturday, May 24th, 2014 – we start at 8:00am and hope to be done by 1:00pm (see page 13 for more event details). Those for you with trucks: we need all the trucks we can get out to make this event run smoothly. Get a group of your neighbours together and volunteer for a fun day that helps us all clean up for the summer, and keeps Wildwood looking great!
