Update: Douglas Fir Trail Project.

We want to share an important update from the City of Calgary regarding the Douglas Fir Trail Project.

The Douglas Fir Trail has been closed since November 2023 due to erosion and slope instability. The City has been carrying out detailed assessments, and repair work has now begun on a smaller section of the trail.

Here are the key updates:

  • geotechnical study is nearly complete, with the final report expected by late fall 2025. This report will guide future repair plans and funding.
  • Trail closures remain in effect from just north of 150 Wildwood Drive S.W. to 48 Wildwood Drive S.W. The timeline for a full reopening is still to be determined.
  • As of September 2025, slope repair work is underway. The south gravel parking lot will be closed for approximately 16 months for construction staging.
  • The Bow River pathway will continue its usual seasonal closure (November–May) and will also be closed at additional times to support the repair work.
  • The western trail segment (near 150 Wildwood Drive S.W.), the north parking lot, and the paved portion of the south parking lot remain open.
  • The City is conducting monthly slope inspections and has confirmed there is no immediate risk to nearby homes.
